The Japan Space Exploration Agency (JAXA), The Environment Agency of Japan (EA), and The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MTI) held the Second ADEOS Workshop at the Pacific Convention Plaza Yokohama (PACIFICO Yokohama) from March 10 (Monday) through March 14 (Friday), 1997; 358 experts from 22 countries participated.
The workshop consisted of three parts:
(1) The plenary sessions on March 10 and March 11 were open to the public as the ADEOS Symposium. Dr. K. Yoshimura, Executive Director of JAXA, gave an opening address. In the plenary sessions, the following reports were made:
- Current status of satellite (JAXA)
- Current status of ground segment (JAXA)
- Data distribution plan from JAXA to PI (JAXA)
- Current status of ADEOS science program (JAXA)
- Current status of instruments, initial results of calibration and
validation, and data distribution plan (JAXA, CNES, NASA, EA and MITI)
(2) Each sensor and science team had meetings between March 12 and March 14.
- OCTS Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM, 14 AM)
- AVNIR Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM)
- ILAS Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM, 13 AM)
- RIS Sensor Team Meeting (13 AM & PM)
- IMG Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM)
- NSCAT Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM)
- TOMS Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM)
- POLDER Sensor Team Meeting (12 AM & PM)
- ILAS Sensor Team Meeting & Atmospheric Science Team Meeting (13 PM)
- Ocean Biology Team Meeting (13 AM & PM)
- Ocean Physics Team Meeting (13 AM)
- Vegetation Biology Team Meeting (13 AM)
- Cryosphere and Hydrological Process Team Meeting (14 AM)
- Geography Team Meeting (13 PM)
- Multiple Cal/Val Team Meeting (13 AM)
(3) The closing session was held in the afternoon of March 14.
- Leaders of sensor and science teams reported summaries and recommendations of the team meetings.
- Status of action items of the first ADEOS Workshop was reported.
- Recommendations and action items of the second ADEOS workshop were reviewed.
- Mr. T. Tanaka, Director of JAXA EORC, summarized the worksho.
a) Early science outputs reveal the promising performance of ADEOS for global change research and others.
Proceedings of the workshop will be published in April, and each PI will receive a copy by May 1997.
b) ADEOS science program is proceeding from 0 to 4 months behind schedule.
c) Smooth ADEOS data distribution is strongly recommended.
d) Improvement of accessibility of EUS is strongly recommended.
Finally, Dr. Y. Toba, Chief Scientist of JAXA EORC, gave a closing address.
There are two proposals for the next ADEOS workshop.
One is JAXA's proposal that the next workshop be held in Japan in the beginning of December 1997;
the other is NASA's proposal that NASA host the third ADEOS Workshop in March 1998.
