ADEOS SERIES RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT 1997

We are now preparing to publish a Research Announcement (RA) for ADEOS and ADEOS-II, provisionally named "ADEOS Series Research Announcement 1997 (ADEOS Series RA 97)." We had difficulty in drafting the RA, so we had to spend more time than we had expected. As a result, we now plan to issue the RA in February 1997, almost one month behind the schedule reported in the previous Newsletter.

As noted in the previous ADEOS Newsletter, algorithm development for ADEOS is limited in the RA. Target algorithms are now under review. The algorithms below are candidates.

  1. For individual sensors
    1. Atmospheric correction (OCTS/AVNIR)
    2. Chlorophyll-a retrieval (OCTS/POLDER)
    3. Ocean primary production retrieval (OCTS)
    4. Sea surface temperature retrieval (OCTS/IMG)
    5. Cloud characteristics (OCTS/POLDER/IMG)
    6. Sea surface wind vector retrieval (NSCAT)
    7. Aerosol retrieval (OCTS/TOMS/POLDER/ILAS)
    8. Coaster water quality (OCTS)
    9. Vegetation cover (OCTS/AVNIR/POLDER)
    10. Vegetation parameters such as APAR, LAI, NPP (OCTS/AVNIR/POLDER)
    11. Ice and snow cover (OCTS/AVNIR/NSCAT)
    12. Generation of digital elevation data (AVNIR)

  2. For multiple sensors
    1. Chlorophyll-a retrieval (OCTS, POLDER)
    2. Sea surface temperature retrieval (OCTS, IMG)
    3. Air-sea interaction (OCTS, NSCAT, IMG)
    4. Cloud characteristics (OCTS, POLDER, IMG)
    5. Aerosol retrieval (OCTS, TOMS, POLDER, ILAS)
    6. 4-dimensional assimilation of ozone (IMG, ILAS, TOMS, RIS)
    7. Vegetation cover (OCTS, AVNIR, POLDER)
    8. Vegetation parameters such as APAR, LAI, NPP (OCTS, AVNIR, POLDER)
    9. Ice and snow cover (OCTS, NSCAT)
Other research areas encouraged in this ADEOS Series RA 97 were described in ADEOS Newsletter No. 4.

The tentative schedule for the ADEOS Series RA 97 is as follows:

  1. RA Issue: February 15, 1997
  2. Proposal Deadline: May 15, 1997
  3. Proposal Selection: August 15, 1997
  4. Research Start: September 1997
  5. Research Review: September 1999
