MEETING OF THE SELECTION BOARD FOR RESAP-JAXA RA

The ESCAP Regional Space Applications Program (RESAP), in cooperation with JAXA, issued the RESAP-JAXA Research Announcement, specially for selected Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, United Nations (ESCAP) member countries, on May 24, 1996.
RESAP-JAXA RA seeks to enhance and demonstrate the ADEOS potential for Earth monitoring in collaboration with ESCAP member countries. ESCAP received 71 proposals from 15 member countries in the Asian Sub-region of ESCAP by the deadline for the submission of proposals.

The Selection Board for RESAP-JAXA RA met at ESCAP Headquarters in Bangkok from September 11 to 13, 1996 to evaluate and select proposals for the ADEOS program from among the proposals received in ESCAP from developing member countries of the region in response to RESAP-JAXA RA. The members of the Selection Board were as follows:

STAS/ENRMD stands for Space Technology Applications Section, Environment and Natural Resources Management Division.

The meeting chaired by Mr. Tasuku Tanaka evaluated 71 received proposals following four criteria:

  1. scientific and technical merit of the proposal,
  2. methodology and approach,
  3. personnel strength, and
  4. supporting environment and facilities.
The board finally selected 20 proposals for this RESAP-JAXA RA. The 20 selected proposals are from 15 countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam).

ESCAP and JAXA have been studying and checking the selected proposals thoroughly, and will advise PIs who need to modify their proposed research plan.
ESCAP will send the letters of acceptance or rejection in the beginning of October. Each selected PI will sign contracts with ESCAP regarding the execution of the proposed study in October and start his/her research work. The first PI meeting is planned to be held in Bangkok on December 10 and 11, 1996.

The name of each PI and his/her research theme will be announced in the next ADEOS Newsletter which is planned to be issued in the end of December. The next ADEOS Newsletter will also report the First RESAP-JAXA PI meeting.
