System Protoflight Test
Protoflight models (PFMs) of core sensors and AO sensors were delivered to the ADEOS system office from June to December 1994. After the satellite was assembled, the ADEOS system Protoflight Test (PFT) was started on December 19, 1994. The tests below were subsequently completed at Tsukuba Space Center. During these tests, the ADEOS launch date was postponed from February to August of 1996 to minimize development risk. The thermal vacuum test is presently being performed.
- Initial electrical performance test (I-EPT)
- Mechanical environment test
- Post mechanical environment test EPT
- EOC compatibility test
Anomalies with instruments, checkout equipment and interface conditions were found during I-EPT. Though the troubleshooting took much time, most anomalies have been resolved and the satellite system electrical performance, including compatibility with sensors, was verified.
The mechanical environment tests included acoustic, vibration, and shock tests. These tests and the post mechanical environment test EPT verified the satellite could withstand the launch conditions and on orbit pyroshock conditions.
During the EOC compatibility test, sensor mission data were transmitted via X-band and USB transmitter to the EOC ground system. The mission data were recorded and processed, and the compatibility between the satellite and EOC ground system was verified.
During the electrical performance tests, the ADEOS office evaluated the sensor mission data and requested that the sensor office evaluate its mission data in detail. Though sensor performance tests were restricted because of the system PFT configuration, the sensor office was able to confirm that the sensors maintained their performance.
The thermal vacuum test began in early November and will continue to mid December. During this test, the thermal control performance and electrical performance will be verified under the vacuum and thermal conditions expected on orbit.
Preparation for launch site operation and on-orbit operation
The plan for launch site operation in Tanegashima is being reconsidered due to the launch date shift.
The satellite on-orbit operational documents, including handbook, initial checkout procedure and operational procedure, were issued in March and are being maintained with support from the sensor office.
