Phytoplankton bloom in the Bering Sea observed by ADEOS/OCTS

RGB image of nLw (666, 565, 490nm), CHLA, and SST processed by GLI ocean algorithms.

CHLA shows high value (yellow to red) in broad area from the coast to
the continental shelf of Alaska. Colors of nLw range among light-blue,
green, dark-green, and brown in this area, and it seems to indicate
biological activities become very high in this season. However, SST is
very low (0 to 5 degree C) except from coastal area even in May.
In early summer, biological activities around these seas become the
highest in the world according to phytoplankton bloom after melting
of sea and land ices. It is known that a humpback whale comes up to
the seas between the Okhotsk Sea and Alaska Bay to look for the
rich food due to the phytoplankton bloom in early summer.
