Time series of CHLA and SST by multi-satellite observationsTime-longitude (0-deg N) sections and monthly images of CHLA and
SST anomaly (deviation from Reynolds and Smith's climatorogy). CHLA is
observed by OCTS and SeaWiFS. SST is observed by OCTS, AVHRR, and VIRS
(TRMM).In 1997 summer, previous El Nino
(1997-1998) started rapidly from a La Nina-like condition (e.g., Dec.
1996). One-year later (1998 summer), it was transitioned rapidly to
strong La Nina condition. SST anomaly and CHLA showed remarkable features
according to the changes in the Equatorial
Pacific. After the La Nina (since 2000 summer), SST anomaly has been increased gradually, and today's condition seems to be (weak) El Nino-like. This transition looks quite different from the previous El Nino. ADEOS-2 GLI will be launched in winter 2002. It will provide continuous information after the following observations. |
