Evaluation of land biomass and primary production on a global scale
There have been large differences
between carbon dioxide budget estimates by models and in situ
measurements. One of the reasons for these discrepancies is an
inaccurate evaluation of the carbon dioxide amount absorbed by land
vegetation. Data sets from 250m channels of GLI may contribute to
solving this problem if a detailed land area biomass map can be
created from GLI data sets. AVHRR and LANDSAT data sets have been
used for the same purpose. The spatial resolution of the former is,
however, 1km, and it requires a longer time to achieve global coverage
with the latter. The biomass map thus created from GLI will be used to
study seasonal and annual changes of land biomass to improve our
knowledge on the process of land-surface carbon cycle.
