For evaluation of global ocean biomass and primary production

It is very difficult to detect long-term trends of ocean biomass since it varies widely over a short time. It is important to produce a long yet accurate time series of ocean color datasets generated from CZCS, SeaWiFS, OCTS and GLI sensors. Those retrieval results, along with observations from ships and buoys, will be used as key input parameters to biogeochemical cycle models to improve our knowledge of the ocean carbon cycle.
There are many species of phyotoplankton in the ocean, each of which plays a different biogeochemical role in the ocean environment. Carefully allocated ocean color channels of GLI will be useful in identifying these species of phytoplankton. Ocean color channels also will be useful in evaluating the biomass around continental shelves where the optical properties are complicated due to complex environmental conditions affected by river runoff. Both accurate estimation of the chlorophyll-a amount and the distribution of land origin substances, such as suspended matter and dissolved organic matter, should be possible by analyzing GLI ocean color data sets.
